A Parent’s Perspective
A Parent’s Perspective: The Lasting Impact of High-Impact Tutoring on Literacy and Confidence
At North Carolina Education Corps (NCEC), we’ve always known the value of high-impact tutoring. When that impact is seen not just in academic progress but in long-term confidence and personal growth, it reinforces why this work is so important. We’ve heard from educators and students alike about the transformative power of NCEC Corps Members. Today, we’re excited to share a particularly meaningful perspective—one from Lauren Piper, a parent who also happens to be Granville County Public Schools’ literacy coordinator.
As a mother and an education leader, Piper’s dual perspectives demonstrate how our program touches lives in unexpected ways. Not only did her son’s literacy skills improve, but she also saw his confidence grow. Over the course of the school year, her son’s literacy scores soared by more than 100 points, but the most significant change wasn’t measured in numbers. The boost in his confidence also made a lasting impression, and even years later, her son still remembers the relationship he built with the NCEC Corps Member.
Parents’ Role in High-Impact Tutoring
Parents play an important role in the success of any educational program. Because Piper is part of the program as a professional and a parent, she has unique insight into how families experience NCEC’s impact. When parents see academic growth and emotional and personal development in their children, it strengthens their belief in the value of the partnership.
Building Relationships Beyond Literacy
The story doesn’t end with improved test scores. The most powerful moment came recently, two years after Piper’s son had completed the tutoring program. One evening, out of the blue, her son asked if they could find the book his tutor gave him. They did, and inside the cover was a handwritten note from the Corps Member, telling him what a bright student he was and how he was destined for great things.
This thoughtful gesture is a perfect example of what sets NCEC apart. We focus on immediate academic results and are deeply invested in the long-term success of the students we serve. This Corps Member’s note wasn’t just an acknowledgment of Piper’s son’s reading abilities but an affirmation of his potential. And years later, it’s a memory that has stayed with him.
For Piper and countless others, these meaningful relationships are a critical part of why programs like ours work. When a child feels seen and valued, their sense of self-worth grows alongside their academic abilities.
A Special Kind of Endorsement
When a district literacy coordinator overseeing education programs in the community also chooses that same program for her child, it says a lot. Piper’s endorsement is especially meaningful, as it comes from someone who understands the power of high-impact tutoring from both a personal and professional perspective.
Through stories like hers, we will share the true impact of our Corps Members, not just as literacy tutors but as mentors who pour into the lives of their students, helping them grow in confidence and character.
We will continue to share stories from parents, educators, and community leaders who have seen the transformative power of high-impact tutoring up close. We invite you to be part of this journey and witness the many ways we’re building brighter futures together.
