About

The Challenge

Earlier this decade, COVID-19 had a drastic impact on education across our state. Many students fell behind academically as families were forced to juggle work, school, and other priorities. Many teachers struggled more than ever to keep students engaged.

North Carolina Education Corps (NCEC) launched as a response to the pandemic's disruptive effects on schools and families. As our state plays catch-up, we've charted a carefully designed path to get students back on track.

Our Response

North Carolina Education Corps partners with local public school units (PSUs) to recruit, train, and support literacy tutors to support K-5 students and accelerate learning. We have also instituted a pilot program for math tutoring.

Hundreds of high-impact NCEC tutors are employed part-time by schools to help elevate young people through lesson plans grounded in the science of reading, reading instruction, and math. For example, literacy tutors empower K-5 students to build their phonological awareness and phonics abilities — proven foundational skills for learning how to read.

Tutors and school administrators benefit from NCEC's highly effective recruitment and application process, training, and on-the-ground support throughout each tutor's tenure.

Our Partners

The North Carolina State Board of Education and Office of the Governor, in partnership with former state superintendent Mike Ward and local school districts, launched the North Carolina Education Corps to accelerate learning recovery. The Mebane Foundation, C.D. Spangler Foundation, SECU Foundation, and Goodnight Educational Foundation provided essential early investments to ensure the success of this critical effort.
