Recognized by the National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA)
The leading authority on high-impact tutoring program design has given NCEC top marks.
NSSA Tutoring Program Design Badge
The National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA) is a program at Stanford University. NSSA is devoted to translating promising research about how tutoring can benefit students into action on the ground. The NSSA Tutoring Program Design Badge is a way to recognize tutoring programs for their commitment to design their programs around research-backed characteristics.
The NC Education Corps program has earned the badge as it “excels in several key areas including high-impact program design, tutor recruitment and selection, and integration with the school schedule.”

High-Impact Tutoring
High-impact (sometimes called high-dosage) tutoring is a well-researched, proven method of helping students grow. It is intentional, relational, and personalized.
Though some programs claim to be “high-impact,” they may not align to research-backed standards. The NSSA badge recognizes programs that are high-quality high-impact tutoring based on their research.
High-impact tutoring, as defined by the NSSA, is:
In a small group or
1-on-1
At least 3 times per week
30-minute sessions
Aligned with school curriculum
Using trained tutors

Full alignment with key elements of the NSSA’s Tutoring Quality Standards
NCEC’s model has been evaluated by the NSSA based on their Tutoring Quality Standards, which were developed by a group of researchers, tutoring providers, and district leaders.
The robust standards are used to holistically evaluate a tutoring program’s design across multiple domains, that research has shown to improve outcomes for students participating in high-impact tutoring programs.
NCEC’s program is in alignment with NSSA standards, including:
- Program Design: The design of the tutoring program is informed by the needs of the community it serves
- Organizational Culture: The tutoring program has a defined mission, vision, and set of organizational goals
- Tutor Consistency: The program’s approach to staffing ensures that students meet consistently with the same tutor for an extended period of time
- Dosage: The tutoring program provides each student with at least three 30-minute tutoring sessions per week for a predetermined amount of time (i.e., 40 hours, 10 weeks, fall semester)
- Ratio: The ratio of students to tutors in the program does not exceed 4:1
- Tutor Recruitment and Selection: There is a clear, comprehensive tutoring job description that results in tutors with the skills and mindsets necessary to be successful in that program
- Setting: The tutoring program occurs during the school day
Integration with School - Schedule: Tutoring schedule ensures students still participate in Tier 1 instruction, non-core classes, and recess
